Indicators for Mental Health

The UN have adopted the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and mental health is included - A historic step for mental health! Now the UN need to make it work.
The SDGs will be measured by indicators, to measure the progress of the SDG goals and targets, and to hold countries accountable of their commitments. Only with strong indicators, mental health will really count in the development Agenda 2030.
A 'preliminary final' list of 230 indicators has been adopted by the UN in March 2016.
'Mental and behavioral health disorders are the leading causes of disability worldwide. The health of our generation and the next depends on in large part of our ability to reduce the burden of mental illness and it is critical that the Sustainable Development Goals and their indicators chart this course.’ - Dr. David Satcher
The UN have adopted two mental health indicators

Indicator 3.4.2   Suicide mortality rate
(linked to SDG Target 3.4: By 2030, reduce by one third premature mortality from non-communicable diseases through prevention and treatment and promote mental health and well-being)

Indicator 3.5.2   Harmful use of alcohol, defined according to the national context as alcohol per capita consumption (aged 15 years and older) within a calendar year in litres of pure alcohol
(linked to SDG Target 3.5: Strengthen the prevention and treatment of substance abuse, including narcotic drug abuse and harmful use of alcohol)

But severe mental disorders are not included in the SDG indicators so far!

FundaMentalSDG calls for inclusion of severe mental disorders in the SDG indicators
FundaMentalSDG proposes to include an additional indicator:
  • Indicator: Proportion of persons with a severe mental disorder (psychosis, bipolar affective disorder, or moderate-severe depression) who are using services.
This indicator is fully aligned with the WHO Global Mental Health Action Plan.

You can Take Action:

FundaMentalSDG has drafted a position paper and supporting documents. Please send these documents to your national statistics department (if you have a direct contact to them, or to a general email address). In addition, you can also send these to UN STATs: statistics@un.org, with a simple email asking for inclusion of this additional indicator. Thank you.
